Then the group will be able to stay with Beorn.
We know Bilbo, the hobbit, was well guided and well guarded on his way home because Gandalf, the wizard, accompanied Bilbo all the way home to his hobbit-hole, while Beorn, the shape-shifter, accompanied him just until they approached his house in Mirkwood. Also because Beorn gives very good advice about Mirkwood.
Mirkwood was a dangerous place. It was very easy to get lost in the woods as well. There were giant spiders in the woods. The Necromancer in the woods that hadn't been driven out yet. And the elves were not likely to be friendly.
He very much dislikes wargs and goblins. Beorn liked the travelers because they had killed the Great Goblin.
He knew that Beorn would be out there. In his bear form, he might not be able to keep himself from hurting them. They saw many bear tracks and Beorn showed them the Warg and the Goblin that he had killed that night.

Beorn had a handful of his own animals at his command and were trained, he could turn in to an animal himself and let Bilbo and his companions stay at his home outside the borders of Mirkwood. He went outside at night to keep watch whilst the companions slept. He cares for his animals more than anything, he lets the companions borrow horses but followed them in the shadows when they were on their way to Mirkwood, where the companions would let the horses go back to Beorn's home and Beorn followed his animals back.
