When Mr. Everdeen died it really sent Mrs. Everdeen into depression. With Mrs. Everdeen being so depressed, Katniss had to start taking care of herself, her mother, and Prim. She started hunting in the woods by herself to get food for her family.

Badly. When her husband died, she became 'lost' and stopped looking after her children. She didn't go and find work, unlike Hazelle who lost her husband at the same time. So, as a consequence, Katniss had to become breadwinner of the family at eleven as she was afraid she and her sister Prim would be taking to the social authorities where they treat children badly. Katniss doesn't forgive her mother for leaving them.

Her mother was very upset. Upset enough to basically forget she still had children to care for. She was zoned out of the world.
