Katniss Everdeen's father died when she was 11 and her sister Primrose was 7. He died in a coal mining accident where there was an explosion underground and he couldn't get help. This left Katniss, Primrose and her Mother alone to fend for themselves. Soon after Katniss started hunting illegally with gale to get food for the family and to sell on to other people to get money as her mother wasn't making any. When Katniss was saying her final (or what she thought would be final) goodbye to her Mother and Prim, she said for her mother to stay and look after Prim and not to run away and leave her as it would be tough living by herself without her.
Hope this Helps you.
