The fourth Hokage is dead. He sacrificed himself to protect Konoha against the nine-taled fox , Kyuubi. He used the Dead Demon Consuming seal jutsu and sealed the Kyuubi in Naruto, in exchange for his life.

in naruto the fourth hokage is still alive because he is really hideing and in the manga the fourth hokage is narutos dad he men't him all ready and his mom his mom mostly telled naruto every thing and naruto ask some things.And he is fighting the 9 tails he all most riped the seal off but he didn't and the fourth hokage (dad) stoped him he got mind washed by the 9 tails and when he is vsing pain he tarned in to 8 tails all most 9tails

Now if Yondaime (Fourth Hokage) used this Jutsu he should have died, but the mark is actually on Naruto. The fourth hokage isn't dead he sealed the nine-tailed fox and himself inside naruto. In Naruto shippuuden when naruto is fighting the akatsuki leader pein, he unleases the power of the 8th tailed of the nine-tailed beast, and when he unleashes the power the 4th hokage appears inside naruto and talks to naruto so hes alive. (SPOILER -- DONT READ AHEAD IF YOU DONT WANT TO READ ANY SPOILERS.) but most people should know this but at that moment when the 4th hokage appears naruto finds out that he is the son of the 4th hokage
