Yes, as a fictional character created by Victor Hugo. Hugo who specialized in social problems- this is one of them, was up to a point the French equivalent of Dickens. Prior to him, writers focussed mainly on love situations and idealized ones at that, court romance, etc. Hugo went down to earth- and had an audience.

The Charles Laughton version of Victor Hugo's novel was released in 1939, which is considered to be the greatest year for movies in history. As a result, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" received only two Academy Awards nominations: Best Original Score (Alfred Newman) and Best Sound (John Aalberg).

Newman lost to Herbert Stothart, who won for his memorable score from "The Wizard of Oz." Aalberg was a runner up to sound editor Bernard Brown for "When Tomorrow Comes."
