The 1961 drama about pool player "Fast Eddie" Felson (Paul Newman) received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. But it won only in the categories of Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Harry Horner and Gene Callahan) and Best Black-and-White Cinematography (Eugen Schüfftan).

Newman won his only competitive Oscar 25 years later for reprising the role of Felson in Martin Scorsese's "The Color of Money" (1986).
