Compare Dobby in Rowling's Harry Potter and Gollum in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings?

They were bound to evil masters and eventually broke away. Gollum, in a sense broke away when he fell into Mount Doom. Dobby broke free when Harry gave him the sock. Gollum and Dobby both had good intentions, but wether it was Dobby's loyalty to the Malfoys or Gollum's obession with the ring, they made it very hard for the protagonists to complete their quests. Gollum was more evil than Dobby. He planned to do more evil than good, and was determined to get the ring from Frodo. Dobby on the other hand, had good intentions but had everything to go wrong.

In the movies, both were computer generated. They had overly skinny legs and arms, big heads and big eyes. Both have long skinny fingers.

Dobby could do magic while Gollum could not. Gollum had been corrupted, while Dobby maintained his innocence and desire to do good.

Gollum was in a sense evil and cunning although he was possesed as fredo was becoming Dobby was almost pure and inoncent although in book 2 he did some nasty things to try and protect harry

The 'Lord of the Rings' were six books published in three volumes, called 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King', which involved Frodo Baggins and HIS adventures, which all revolved around casting the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, so that it, and along with it the villain's evil powers, would be destroyed.
