There is no set age, although some anime are for children, and some are strictly for adults. It depends on the specific convention. Many of them allow people of any age to attend but require those under a certain age (exactly what that age is, again, depends on the specific convention, but probably somewhere in the 13-16 range) to be supervised by a parent or legal guardian. If you're under 18, there may be specific portions of the programming you're not allowed to attend, period.

So, if you can get your mom or dad to go with you, you're probably fine (except for the 18+ programming). If you can get your dad to watch a couple of episodes of Trigun or Cowboy Bebop, he might agree to go. If he liked Firefly/Serenity, tell him Trigun is "part western, part Science Fiction" and that might do the trick. On the other hand, if he's a big fan of Three's Company reruns, get him to give Love Hina a try.
