Yes, Armaan and Riddhima died on Sept. 21st 2009 in a shootout in Sanjeevani. Riddhima got shot in her back with a bullet, while trying to save Armaan. Armaan hit his head with a glass table and both of them were rushed to the operation theatre. However, in season 2 we see that they are dead.
Atul fails his internship because he gets shot in the hand during that shootout and therefore could not give his exam. Nikita and Abhimanyu break up at the end of season 1 due to the entry of Jiah (Abhi's wife). This leaves a strict, cold, heart-broken Nikita. She is extremely stern with the new interns and tends to stay away from Abhimanyu as much as possible.
In Season 2, we also see that Dr. Keerti Mehra Rai is 6 months pregnant and is soon going on maternity leave. Dr. Shashank Gupta is also seen changed quite a lot after witnessing the death of Riddhima. There are more rules in Sanjeevani and he has become more stricter with all the interns. Dr. Shashank does not want to hear Riddhima's name in the hospital as she died to save Armaan. He is completely shattered and keeps himself away from fun and festivals.
From season 2, we also come to know that Muskaan has gone back to Patiala, Punjab and is working in a simple hospital there. Whereas, Anjali has transferred to the best hospital in Chicago and is assisting the top surgeon there. Rahul had already left in season 1. The only ones left in Sanjeevani are Atul and Niki who miss there friends terribly and can't really live without them.
