What are advantages and disadvantages of diesel locomotive?

Advantages:

- Early style of railroads, and was (at one point) the only way to power a train.

- Gave another reason to mine coal.

- Helped railroads grow and learn more about the fundamentals of railroading.

- Iconic to most.

Disadvantages:

- Very polluting way of powering a train.

- Uses coal, now considered a vital material.

- Very large, and hard to make.

- Used steam, a pressurized product that could (under unexperienced control) over pressurize and cause the locomotive to explode.

- VERY labor intensive. Sometimes, firemen never stopped shoveling coal.

- Extremely hard to maintain. So many moving parts, so much lubrication, so much to do each facility.

There you are. The major disadvantages, and advantages to steam locomotives.

advantages of diesel locomotive are:

1. diesel locomotives are more efficient than steam locomotive.
2. this do not require any adequate supply of water and coal at regular as steam locomotive.
3. in case of double headed train it do not require lot of time for running as it do not require watering and coaling as steam locomotive
4. it can be put into operation immediately
5. it is some what more clean than steam locomotive
6. diesel locomotive has comparatively more operational availability than steam locomotive
7. low initial cost as no track electrification is needed.
8. no interference with any telecommunication line.
9. diesel locomotive speed control is easy ,done by field control by generator.
10. with properly designed engine ,it has over load capacity.

DISADVANTAGE

1. life of diesel locomotive is low
2. its running coast is hi than electric locomotive
3. complex engine design therefore maintenance is high.
4. diesel engine do not have high starting torque
