On cars with a carburetor you must press on the gas pedal to activate the choke, cars with fuel injection do not have a choke so this is not necessary.
In cars with a carburetor the choke is used to help start the engine when could. Engaging the choke closes a flap which reduces the amount of air in the fuel mixture when the engine is started.
Choke is a mode of air/fuel mixing that causes a rich mixture (meaning a lot of fuel). This is often used upon starting the engine. it is applied manually in older cars, but newer cars have an ECM to control such functions.
all cars have a warm up choke if your choke is not functioning properly it may cause your car to choke specialy in the morning. which it means over flooded in gas.Ans 2 - Only older cars with carburretors have a warm up choke. Almost all current cars have fuel injectors and this type of problem has a different reason. It would help very much if you said type and year of car - -

fuel injected cars don't have automatic chokes, only cars with carburators come with it
These cars have an electric choke relay . The gap when cold should be 1/8". if not you need to change the unnit on the side of the carb. If it is original you need to drill out the 3 pop rivets holding the plastic housing to remove the old one and replace them with the new screws that come with the new choke relay
