1 ton per 500 sq ft. so 5 will do
I am looking for a window AC unit to use in my whole house. What is the BTU's one would need to cool a whole house?

There is no "one size". The number of windows, orientation of the house, insulation, climate, and a number of other factors influence the sizing of the AC unit. If the unit is improperly sized, the energy consumption will be high and the life of the unit will be shortened. The only way to determine the correct size is to do a Manual J calculation, or use software that implements that method.
On average it takes 1 ton per 500 square ft.
Your ac contractor or engineer will determine the correct size.

There are many factors to sizing ac units. The geographical location of the residence. The number of windows, levels etc. The way the house faces and so on. Typically if you over size a unit then you do not give the unit to get into its efficiency zone (a few minutes after it starts). It cycles on and is short time cycles off. You also do not allow the ac unit to remove the moisture in the air of the house and you get a cold clammy feeling. If you undersize, then the unit runs all the time full and uses energy constantly. Ask your local ac installers to size your unit.
