A star wheel is a component of a drum-type braking system that "self-adjusts" the clearance of the shoe from the drum when the brakes are applied during reverse motion. Linkage within the brake assembly engages a lever into the star shaped outer portion of a nut on the bolt between the bottom of both shoes. When brakes are applied during reverse travel, excess motion of one of the brake shoes is transferred to the lever rotating the star wheel and decreasing the clearance between shoes and drum.
The star wheel may also be manually rotated through a slot in the backing plate to back the shoes away from the drum for drum removal or to set the shoes close to the drum after replacement.
