- There are many other combinations out there of "18-wheelers" that do not have 18 wheels. Basically, an "18-wheeler" is the slang term for any truck-trailer combination that is over 26,000# and uses a 5th wheel setup for attaching the trailer to the tractor (truck). - A typical, standard, five axle tractor-trailer combination in North America has 18 wheels. Always has, always will. - In some instances, companies may replace the dual wheels with what are known as 'Super Singles' - a single, very wide tire and rim which replace a dual wheel. There are several companies out there that think that this is a more efficient way to run tires on their rigs. - Of course, there are combinations which may have more or less road wheels - a tractor-trailer which has less or more than 18 wheels is still a tractor-trailer, for which the term "18 wheeler" has become synonymous (due to 18 wheels being the norm). - The term "18-wheeler" is just like Vice-Grips (locking-jaw pliers), or Channel-Locks (slip-jaw pliers), or Kleenex (tissue paper). - They are all "improper" names synonomously used for a given item. Kudos!
