Depends on the State ... and the cop
Decals should be changed before the last day it is supposed to expire. After that date it is illegal and you could be ticketed.
In my state, the cops usually start looking for expired tags mid-month and start passing out tickets. However, I have seen some state laws that give you 1 month leeway to get renewed decals.
Until the police spot you and impound your car. You cannot operate your vehicle with expired tags.

You get arrested
There is no buffer for the violation in New Hampshire. If the tags are expired, you can get a ticket.

You can sell the car with expired plates. You just cannot drive it.
yo can drive anywhere as long as you do not get caught. the trick is not drawing on o your automotive like all lights work, drive normal , you did not mention if the plates were also expired, if so your a ticking time bomb. if you need to anywhere, borrow a car or register your car its h cheaper then any fines ou may incur.
What is the fine for an expired inspection - I drive a company owned car - they won't fix it so it will pass. They are looking for a new car - and knowingly are making me drive this car. My question is - who gets the ticket ? me or company - and what is the ruling -- cash or cash and points ? Thank you

The owner of the car must pay for the license plates fines. It is illegal to drive with expired license plates.
