An ignition coil is two loops or "Coils" of wire one inside the other.

When you apply a current to the Coil of wire with less coils of wire it creates a magnetic Field.

When the magnetic Field collapses when the electricity is removed this induces a current in both coils of wire. The coil that has just had the power removed from to a very small degree. To the other coil that has many more coils of wire the current induced is very high voltage. This causes the spark to jump the gap on the spark plug.

To make this happen correctly the power must be turn on and of very quickly and cleanly.
