Usually there are one or two stickers on a car that indicate the registration date, which is the same as the required renewal date.
In Colorado, for example, there is one sticker placed on the bottom left of the rear license plate and one sticker placed on the bottom right of the rear license plate. The stickers are roughly 1" tall by 1 1/2" wide and each have a number and a color. The left sticker is always white and has a blue number indicating the MONTH. i.e. 1 would be January. The right sticker has a number indicating the YEAR and shows the last two digits of the year i.e. 12 would indicate 2012. When the date on the stickers is past, your registration is past due and you need new "tags"! Usually you will get correspondence in the mail from the state one or two months before your registration expires instructing you on what requirements are needed for your car to register for that year. In most cases, a car will need an emissions test and a registration fee to be paid before you get new tags. Some cars are emissions exempt because they are new, and some areas do not require emissions tests.
