A 1950 Massey Ferguson typically uses a hydraulic oil in its transmission system. Commonly, 90-weight gear oil or a specific transmission fluid recommended by the manufacturer can be used. Always refer to the owner's manual for the exact specifications and recommendations for optimal performance.
sae 90 gear oil. it is 100% mineral oil. napa, car quest, call your local massey dealer they have it. you will pay a little more but they have all the answers.
You're probably looking at the transmision/hydraulic oil level. The filler hole is a hex-head bolt just below (towards the seat) from the left-hand gear stick.
If the trans is locked in one gear, and the stick refuses to move, it has very likely jumped out of the shift selector rods. You will likely have to remove the shift stick cross pin, to pull the stick out, and manually with a long flat screw driver, shift all rods to the neutral position. There are cut aways in the rods. The neutral position should be when they are all in the same general location so the stick can move between them. Test this by bumping the starter, before replacing the stick.
There is a cap right next to the gear shifters. It's about 1-3/4" dia or so with a hex head on top. The hydraulics share the same fluid as the transmission.
to the left of the gear lever is a cap with a 1 1/16 bolt head on it. remove that cap and fill there. To check the level the is a small dipstick under the lift on the frame.

For the Massey Ferguson 124 baler's main gearbox, it is typically recommended to use an EP (Extreme Pressure) gear oil with a viscosity rating of 80W-90. Always check the owner's manual for specific manufacturer recommendations, as they may vary based on model and operating conditions. Ensuring the right oil type will help maintain optimal performance and longevity of the gearbox.
The Massey Ferguson 290 typically requires a hypoid gear oil for its differential, often specified as an SAE 80W-90 or an equivalent oil meeting API GL-5 specifications. It's important to check the operator's manual for the exact oil type and capacity requirements specific to your model, as there may be variations. Regularly checking and maintaining the oil can help ensure optimal performance and longevity of the differential.
