Yes. A car can run without an exhaust manifold. It will burn out the exhaust valves in the cylinders a lot faster than normal, but it can be done.
Record: Burn rubber on me Group: The gap band
there is always exhaust (expect when the engine's off or hybird) unless you are too close to the car in front of you.
One word, condensation. But the original equipment exhaust systems are lasting longer these days because they are using better metal.
The exhaust suffers badly for a number of reasons:It is very exposed to water, debris, salt and damage from materials thrown up to the under bodyThey are made of relatively thin steel, with usually only a thin coating or none at all. The heat generated by the exhaust makes most paints burn off.The exhaust undergoes extremes of heat and cold, as well as internal water vapour, all of which speed oxidisation. There is the option of a stainless steel exhaust, which can last 10 years or more, but these are expensive to manufacture, so are generally not used on lower end vehicles.
A dual exhaust system is designed to reduce exhaust backpressure, making the engine run more efficiently.
by having a exhaust shop weld on a y pipe then just run the dual pipes out the back
Dual exhaust systems are systems in cars that have two mufflers and two exhaust pipes. This system is called a dual exhaust system, or a twin exhaust system. It can be installed on a vehicle after market.
For a 1998 Lincoln Town Car : It depends on which state it is sold in and if it is single or dual exhaust Single exhaust ( 200 or 205 horsepower ) Dual exhaust ( 215 or 220 horsepower )
Really it hardly allows more exhaust throught since it is a dual muffler not a true dual exhaust system. You could block one of the exhaust pippes and your car would still run fine. Most of it was for sellin props like mentioned in the previous answer. to allow more exhaust gas to flow out than a 4 cylinder. and for selling purpose
A good muffler shop can fabricate a dual exhaust system for that car.

it has 2 mufflers. the exhaust pipe splits into two pipes and the you got a muffler on each side of the car...

burn you
In some case it is just for looks as they are not true dual exhaust systems. In other cases they are for improved performance and are true dual exhaust systems. On most V6 or V8 cars they do improve performance. On a 4 cylinder they do very little to improve performance.
The opposite side of the exhaust pipe. If its dual exhaust, whatever side works best for manufacturing.
