Yes. It's as much for your protection as someone else's. If you're financing the car, the lender usually requires proof of insurance. The state also requires proof of insurance when you renew your license plate tabs or submit the car for inspection (whichever your state requires). Most states have a minimum level of coverage that's required that is pretty affordable.
