A faulty thermostat. leaking head gasket lower radiator hose soft collapses when motor is reved up
The hose is soft and mushy inside. Replace the hose. Possible clogged radiator. Replace the hose first. You also might have a clogged radiator core. Have a reputable radiator shop check and flush your cooling system.
It could be several reasons related to the coolant system, but the most likely one is that the hose has just become soft and fatigued and needs replacing.
check that the radiator hoses are not soft with engine hot , squeeze hose with your hand you should have strong resistance in hose if they are good other thing is to not fill radiator thru radiator, but to fill thru overflow bottle
Heat will have that effect on rubber. Like molasses, it's easier to work with when the temps get higher and the opposite when the temps get lower. If you are concerned about the hose, I would do a check on the hose when the car has had a chance to sit overnight. This is called a "cold" check and you will notice the soft spots immediately when squeezing the hose in different spots. One part of the hose will be firm and then there will be one spot the feels more like a soft and mushy blister. If so, change the hose immediately or you will be afoot or worse, the car will overheat and you take a big chance on ruining the engine permanently. Hope this helps. Cheers, Chrestmaker The cooling system should be pressurized when hot and the hoses should be firm. I suspect the radiator cap is not doing its job.
next to the soft bottom hose on the radiator.should be a ring nut
Thermostat opening too soon? Heater air bound and needs to be bled
Many radiator hoses come with a spring on the inside to prevent collapse. Verify that your vehicle did not originally have that spring. Next, check the radiator hose. If it's too soft you need to replace it. Find a new hose and see if yours is a lot softer. Once the hose starts to break down it will become more flexable. If either of the ends are bulging, replace the hose. Last, keep the radiator full of coolant and make sure the recovery reservoir is working properly.
"It's in good shape, only worry about them when they get real soft." This is not entirely true. Certain rubber compounds will harden and get brittle over time, even hoses. You should check the hose against a know good or new hose and compare.
If the question is: why does your top radiator hose get soft while the engine is running? If that's what u want to know, it's because the thermostat in the engine opens to flow the coolant thru the motor to keep the operating temperature from getting to hot. It's stores water in the radiator which cools the water and the thermostat blocks it until a predetermined temp.
No! My mechanic just came over last night and was looking at my car. Same as you, 02 Ford Taurus. My coolant has been leaking, and he figured out that the upper radiator hose was the problem. He said it just gets worn down over time and then becomes soft. Sounds like its time to replace yours, only cost me about $17 at advanced auto. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dayco-curved-radiator-hose-e71840/15590076-P?vehicleIdFromReq=147426&isAllVehicle=false&vehicleIdSearch=147426&searchTerm=e71840&showTitle=
Try sqeasing the return hose from the radiator if it is real soft it is weak . did it to me and i replaced it and worked .
