If a car backfires, the fuel mixture is incorrect. I believe it's too lean. Also, timing could be off. Try increasing the fuel mixture with the jets on the carburetor. You may want to reference your VW shop manual for which one to use. If that doesn't solve the problem, then have a garage time the vehicle to make sure pre-ignition isn't happening.
Your VW could be backfiring because: A backfire is when the ignition of fuel doesn't take place in the ignition/combustion chamber, it(a backfire) can take place in the intake or exhaust. It can be caused by a fuel to air ratio not being correct, also if the timing of the spark is not just right that could cause it to back fire. It could be running lean with not enough fuel and too much air, or could have too much fuel and not enough air. It could be because the intake valves are not shut when the combustion takes place, therefore the combustion would take place in the wrong spot. The most likely cause are from: 1. Incorrect timing, the timing issue could be caused by bad wiring/ or bad ignition. 2. Incorrect fuel to air ratio, bad fuel filter, low fuel pressure-caused by weak fuel pump. Most cars will have the same cause for backfiring, as long as it's an internal combustion engine it shouldn't differ...
Backfiring in any motor is either badly out of time or a burnt valve.
Hey John==Without knowing what you have, it is strictly guessing. Check the firing order. Make sure the compression is ok on the engine. GoodluckJoe
have they check the timing on it. sometimes when timing is off by a few degrees it would cause both rough idle and backfiring. also check for a dead cylinder.
backfiring can be caused by many things. bad sparkplugs, bad condensor, bad coil, bad distributer, bad plug wires.burnt out valve will cause backfiring.bad fuel injectors or carburattor, depending on which system u have.leaking inlet manifold, leaking exhaust manifold.a stcky choke . incorrect timing, the list goes on. see a mechanic
Go to the Library. http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/ It has diagrams for all vintage VW's
If it is backfiring only when you kill the engine, allow the engine to idle a few minutes before you kill it. If it is backfiring while in use, check the intake gasket and bolts for wear or looseness.
Major tune up time. Replace plugs and filters and do a valve job. Make sure the carbs are synched. If this fails to improve things, get your carbs worked on.
after rebuiling carb jet have 2 b adjusted, check ur timing also If you have any exhaust leaks close to the engine it will promote backfires.
To prevent backfiring make sure the belt is tight and in good working order. Also clean the air filters regularly.
If it is backfiring the timing is set incorrectly or the spark plug wires are not connected in the correct order.
Backfiring.
The best answer for this is: Get a tune-up.
backfiring.
Probably. Backfiring is a symptom of a lean condition. Wouldn't want to leave it like that.
advance the timing a little.
Yes.
Needs a tune up
