1999 Dodge Grand Caravan 3 point 3L is sputtering backfiring and rough idling but no check engine light is on Any suggestions as repair shops cannot figure out problem?

have they check the timing on it. sometimes when timing is off by a few degrees it would cause both rough idle and backfiring. also check for a dead cylinder.
