Depends on the year or type of diesel engine. The older engines had a cannister filter whilst the latest Tdci has a replaceable paper element.
Clean it out!! water will not hurt an alternator but Antifreeze will breakdown the varnish on the Stator windings! Oils is bad but Antifreeze is worse.
If it gets cold enough the coolant will freeze and crack the block if there is no antifreeze.
If the engine is of the same type it will. ie an XUD engine (1905cc) from one peugeot or citroen will fit another xud type but I do not know if it would fit on a HDi engine. On the 1.9 XUD the starter is the same on turbo and nonturbo models.

Diesel antifreeze is specifically formulated to protect diesel engines from extreme temperatures and corrosion. Regular antifreeze is designed for gasoline engines and may not provide adequate protection for diesel engines, which operate at higher temperatures and have different metal components. It is important to use the correct type of antifreeze for your specific engine to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.

diesel has a lower boiling point than antifreeze. as the engine heats up the diesel will vapourize and cause high pressure in your system. you will also has much worse temperature control in your engine.
I was looking at the Ford F-250 7.3L DIESEL supplement and it shows : The engine cooling system capacity is 32.75 U.S. quarts ( includes the heater and the recovery reservoir ) * So , for a 50 / 50 mix of distilled water and the correct type of antifreeze it would take almost ( 16.38 quarts of antifreeze mixed with an equal amount of distilled water )
