Timing specs on GM 350 R Motors Are Set At 0. If You Removed The Distributor There Should Have Been A Paint Mark On The Rear Either Yellow Or White. If You Did Not Line This Mark Back Up You Will Need A Scan Tool Capable Of Giving You The CMP Retard. This Will Be Displayed in Timing Degrees. CMP Stands For Camhaft Position Sensor. If The Timing Exceeds about 10* It Will Flag The Check Engine Light. Note If The Timing Is Off and Distributor Was Not Moved Check The Drive Gear. These Like To Apple Core Around 150000 Miles. Also Make Sure When You Adjust The Timing Keep The RPM over 1000* or CMP will Not update. There Is No EST Bi Pass Wire to Worry About Anymore.Just Watch CMP Retard With RPM over 1000 And Adjust Distributor.
6 to 8 degrees before TDC.
It all depends on what year the truck is. If it is the older version with the round distributer cap, you need a timing light. Connect the timing light to the number 1 cylinder, which is the front one on the drivers side. next you have to put the computer in base timing mode. To do this you need to locate the timing connector, which is usually located in the passenger side under the carpet ,below the hvac unit. Unplug the connector and start the engine, then shine the timing light on the timing marks and loosen the distributor and turn it unill the marks line up .Then tighten the distributor, and reconnect the connector. If it has the flat cap , the timing is set with a scanner .
There is an inline spout connector, kind of like a plug you would plug into the wall, that you have to disconnect before using timing light. This puts the engine in base timing. Set timing to specs and then plug inline spout connector back up.

what are the factory timing specs for a 1977 chevy 454
Chevy 350s have timing chains, not belts. It is designed for the life of the motor. If it is "streched" , the cam timing would be slightly off. Would need a degree wheel, a dial indicator and stock cam specs. intake/closing.
89 octane Factory specs.
how much play should a 4.3 Chevy engine timing chain have?
Probably. It might be hard to set the timing to the correct specs if the vacuum canister gets in the way.

I belive it is 4 degrees advanced at 500 rpm
The timing is electronic controlled. You MUST have an OBDII engine scanner to set the timing to specs. Timing light will not work.
