Correct key? For this answer, it is important to first understand how the wheel locking mechanism works. When you turn the key to the locked position, there is a spring-loaded PINwhich CAN drop into one several pockets [6 to 8 depending on the vehicle I think] on a disk inside the steering column. IF the pin and a slot don't just happen to be aligned perfectly when you turn the key, off, when you pull on the wheel [as in getting out of vehicle], the wheel may turn enough to allow the pin to slip into a slot. If the position is far enough around from the position at stop, then the resistant force of the twisted rubber of the front[steering] tires creates a pre-load force on the pin and slot. Sometimes this problem is worst when parking with the wheels intentionally cut into the curb, as when parking on o hill. If that pressure is great enough, it makes it very difficult to turn the key and thus release the pin from the slot. IF you could turn the key strongly enough, you could probably overpower the friction in the pin/slot interface. However, if the friction is great enough, you could break off the key, and you surely don't want to do that. If this is the case, the solution to the problem is what you have already tried, EXCEPT that you didn't put enough muscle into the "wheel jiggling" to relieve enough pressure from the pin/slot interface. Try doing the jiggling again, but this time, really put the muscle to the wheel turning/jiggling, while simultaneously attempting to turn the key.
Try jiggling the steering wheel while turning the key. Sometimes if the wheels are slights turned when you shut it off the steering wheel is pressed against the ignition switch inside the column. If that doesn't do it you probably will need a new key.
the steering wheel will lock and the key will come out, unless of course the ignition cylinder is broken
Replace just the steering lock unit. The tumblers are old, and they need to be replaces. After replacing the lock, go to a locksmith, and have him re-key the doors to match your new ignition lock.

If you have the key and it won't turn the lock cylinder try jiggling the steering wheel while turning the key. If the steering wheel lock is merely jammed that should loosen it enough to turn the key. On the other hand if you don't have the key or the lock itself is jammed you may want to replace the lock cylinder.
You have to turn the car off and turn it back on. This didn't work immediately for me, but I moved the car back and forth a little, and then it started. Just turning it on and off wasn't enough.

This same thing happened to me. It is a security feature. I bet your steering wheel is locked in place, right? My local Toyota dealership tried to trick me into getting a whole new security system put in for about $500. Right before the tow truck arrived I found the answer in my car's manual. ****Grab your steering wheel and start jiggling it back and forth. At the same time, jiggle your key in the ignition and then turn it! This is a security feature to lock the ignition anytime your steering wheel locked. Good luck!
