Its up underneath the dash. There are four bolts and three wires, black, red and orange and you are done.
the first answer is from someone who has very obviosly never even seen a nova ignition switch. if you have the key, simply put the key in the ignition and leave it in the off position. take a paper clip and insert it into the small hole next to the key, this will allow you to push the switch in further and twist the key counterclockwise allowing the whole unit to slide out.
if you don't have the key, good luck. its a nightmare.
Actually, I think you need to insert the paper clip while the key is in the "accessory" position, then push in and turn counterclockwise. The cylinder can be removed at this point, and you can then remove the bezel nut that holds the ignition switch in place.
both of these answers are telling you how to remove the lock cylinder. the ignition box or switch "both names are commonly used," is on the top of the steering column under the dash. there are two bolts and a wiring harness attached to ignition box. simply remove the two bolts and unplug the wires, remove and reinstall. the hardest part is adjusting the box so the actuator bar is pushing switch into proper position. if you are talking about the lock cylinder go with one of the obove answers. Wow. When the key is on the column, is when they went to the rod type system. On that Nova, it is on the dash, attached to the lock, and tumbler. One piece. the third answer, is the most accurate.
If you want to change the SWITCH, it is on the steering column about 18 inches above the floor. If you want to change the lock cylinder you need to remove the steering wheel, then the lock plate then the turn signal switch then the key reminder switch {the two little copper contacts} and you will see a screw that has a different head that goes through the edge of the cylinder. Take the screw out then pull the lock cylinder out.
turn the bezel nut off the ignition switch, then insert the ignition key into the ignition and get yourself a paper clip and put one end of the paper clip into the small hole next to the key and push in and turn the key to the left and the ignition lock will pull out, then you need to reach under the dash and pull the whole switch out and take all the plug-ins off of it and get your new switch and put the plug-ins back on and reinstall the switch through the dash then take your key and ignition lock and reinstall by basically putting it in the same position it came out and twisting the key like your starting it and it will lock back in, next take the key out and put your bezel nut back on and tighten it and your done.
You should buy a Haynes manual for the car but this is how I did it with the manuals help.
Pre Start: Remove Negative Cable from Battery and/or disable airbag.
1) Pull the kick-panel from the driver side under dash.
2) Remove the 4 small bolts holding the brace for the Steering Column.
3) Remove the 2 Large bolts that hold up the Steering Column and drop the column down. (You may want to remove one of the screws that hold the column to the firewall area, although I did not have to do that)
4) The ignition switch is located right on top of the column. Remove the Two bolts that hold the switch to the column and pull the switch up and off of the linkage.
5) Remove the bolt that holds the connector block in place at the other end of the wires.
6) Remove the two outside connectors by inserting a small screwdriver in between the Ignition switch and the outside connector to release it.
5) The park cable can be detached by removing the two very small black Phillips head screws holding it to the switch.

No, not if it is not defective. If the ignition switch is defective then that is all you need to replace.
When you determine that it is defective.

If your battery is fully charged and the connections are clean and tight, the problem is probably that the contacts in the switch are corroded or worn, meaning your ignition switch will have to be replaced.
