For one, it's just good practice to maintain positive control of your keys at all times. The reasons would be the same as the reasons for not leaving your keys in your own car, although there are other reasons, as well. One of the most important ones is the safety factor. A proper pre-trip involves inspecting the motor - if you have a truck which is slip seated, or you have a co-driver, or there's any chance of someone else cranking that truck, you don't want them doing that while you're inspecting that area of the truck. You don't want them putting it into gear and driving off when you're around the tyres, or when you may be under the truck or on top of it or the load on your trailer.

Attached to the starter. behind the instrument cluster. go under the dash and look to the left sided of the steering column. you will see a junction block with a 7mm screw head in the middle. it will be right above that. it is called a starter enable relay.
I changed the starter in my 98 JXI convertible and it was fairly easy. You can only change it out from underneath the car. It's easiest if you have a means to get some working room under the front end of the car. The starter is located towards the front of the car, right next to the oil filter (just about at the center of the engine compartment). You must remove the oil filter during the job and it should be replaced. Unhook the negative battery cable before starting the repair, remove the wires connected to the starter and undo the two bolts holding the starter in. It slides right out. Make sure the nes starter is securely in place before replacing the bolts. Then hook the wires back up, put the new oil filter on and replace the fuse that always seem to blow when it goes out.
To keep someone from starting the truck and moving it while you're performing the pretrip.
For your safety...
Putting the starter key in your pocket during a pre-trip inspection helps ensure that the vehicle cannot be inadvertently started while you are inspecting it. This practice enhances safety by preventing accidental movement or operation of the vehicle. Additionally, it keeps the key secure and easily accessible when you are ready to start the vehicle after completing the inspection. Overall, it's a simple yet effective safety measure.
For safety reasons. You don't want anybody messing with the truck while you may be under the truck/trailer
