Some people are just liked more than others. Or the popular people have done something that everyone knows about, which made everyone know about them.

Because some sports offer different things. Example : if more people liked Running (track) then Soccer, it would make it popular. No sport is a same , but , they are alike in many ways. Each sport has something different to offer, and some people just tend to like one sport more then the other making it popular.
