Anemia can be deadly and should not be taken lightly. If someone is anemic and unable to stay awake, they need to be taken the emergency room. It is a sign that there is not enough oxygen in the body to keep proper organ function with the brain and heart and other organs. Depending if there is an active bleed or not, it must be treated promptly. Anemia is a lack of circulating blood cells that carry oxygen and the brain cannot store oxygen so if there is a deficiency in oxygen-carrying cells, the brain will die. Depending on a lab test to check the hemoglobin, the person may need a blood transfusion and fluids to improve circulation to decrease symptoms of brain/organ dysfunction.
