The colonies on the surface of a pour plate are obligate aerobes, they need oxygen to grow. The colonies suspended in the agar of the pour plate is facultative anaerobe, where they can live with or without oxygen.

Why are the colonies growing on the top of the agar larger than the colonies growing in the agar?

Well, first of all, the colonies growing on the surface of the agar medium are aerobic . . . that is, they need air - Oxygen - to survive. The anaerobic colonies growing within the agar medium may simply be slower growing or maturing, for some reason. Perhaps that is simply due to their being anaerobic.

What Substance in which particles larger that and those of solutions are dispersed within a medium?

Which species are able to grow both on the surface and within the medium?

Many species of plants and fungi have the ability to grow both on the surface and within the medium. For example, certain grasses and weeds can grow both above and below the soil surface. Similarly, some types of fungi, like mushrooms, can grow both on the ground's surface and within the decaying organic material.

What is Difference between surface and submerged culture?

Surface fermentation refers to those fermentations in which the microorganisms utilised grows on the surface of the fermentation media.Examples being citric acid surface fermentation process wherein the microorganism aspergillus niger grows as a thick floating mycelial mat over the surface of the media used. Submerged fermentation refers to those fermentations wherein microorganisms employed grows in submerged state within the fermentation media.many fermentations fall in this category like penicillin submerged fermentation technique

Do igneous rocks have smaller crystals than those formed above the surface?

Igneous rocks formed within the earth crust have larger crystals than those formed on the surface because they have little or no interaction with atmospheric conditions and they cool very slowly.

What are some advantages of an agar plate over a slant tube?

The following are some advantages of an agar plate verses a slant tube: 1. Surface area- An agar plate has a much larger surface area: a. Easier to isolate individual colonies using the streak-plate method. i. Evaluate the colony shape, margin and elevation. b. Can grow a larger number of cells. 2. Growth- An agar plate allows you to quantify the number of colonies on an agar plate, provided it is within the 30-300 range. Whereas the slant tube cannot quantify growth but only describes growth as none, slight, moderate, or large.
