You cannot reroute the existing belt if you eliminate the A/C compressor from the equation as it will then be too long. You will have to get a smaller belt that will work without routing it around the A/C compressor. That may be very difficult as no Olds 88 came without A/C. Possibly you can find a belt for another vehicle with the same engine that came from the factory without A/C. Any Auto Parts store may be able to help. As long as the compressor clutch is not locked up and the bearing are good, you can just use the compressor as an idler pulley, and simply not use the A/C. Pull the fuse and unplug the clutch so it cannot be engaged.
If it has multiple belts, remove the belt which goes to the compressor. If it has a serpentine belt, reroute the belt so it bypasses the compressor.
if you can reroute the belt to bypass the ac compressor all you need to work out is how much shorter the belt is that you would require
i want a exploded view as a picture ,to show the reroute of the belt.
Google it.
If that model was available without a/c, you will need to purchase the belt for a 95 town car w/out ac, and follow the appropriate belt routing diagram for that model.
Yes, But you have to buy a smaller belt. And it is a bit tough to get it on.
Loosen alternator remove old belt. Reroute new belt, tighten alternator.
can u reroute serp. belt to bypass a\c compressor
Yes, but chances are that you will have to take the compressor off and install an "a/c compressor by-pass pulley". You will probably have to order it as very few places have them in stock. Check with NAPA auto parts. They are the best. AutoZone, Advance, O'Reilly don't carry this item. Check also online since you have to order it but NAPA usually gets it faster than the post office can deliver. NAPA seems to be next day while online ordering SHIPS in two business days.
You can't reroute it with the existing belt. You could, I suppose, install a smaller belt that would work. Try a belt for this same model engine, in which the vehicle did not have A/C. That should work. <<Palmboy - 051605>> For a 1994 Lumina APV (3.8 L), I bypassed the A/C compressor with a replacement serpentine belt that was 73" in length for ~$21 @ Advanced Discount Autoparts (original belt is ~102"). My problem was an A/C clutch that was making a grinding noise. I determined the new belt length using a piece of cord to measure the new (required) belt length by routing it around the engine accessory components (i.e., Power Steering Pump, Tensioner, Alternator, Water Pump, etc.). I purchased two belts, one @ just over the measured lentgh (73") and one @ under (72") - then returned the 72" belt. This seemed to work fine (so-far-so-good) for getting my vehicle back on the road without the risk of the A/C clutch siezing and throwing the belt. PB

i am looking for an answer to this question myself. i cant seem to find a place that makes the bypass pulleys for the 3.5 liter g6. im also not sure if u can just reroute a shorter belt, as there may be another pulley in the way. if i figure it out i ll repost. if u find the answer yourself, please let me know with a repost
