Not sure what engine you have, but my1992 305 has a roll pin on the end of shaft that is knocked out to remove gear
The Rotor has a small bolt that holds the Rotor on the shaft. Did you Loosen this bolt?
Remove Distributor,remove drive gear,remove shaft,remove pickup coil.
There are 3 screws holding the distributor cap on. After removing the cap, there is a small Phillips head set screw holding the rotor in place on the shaft portion of the rotor.
The easy way is to replace the entire distributor with a remanufactured unit. The hard way is to mark position of distributor rotor, remove the distributor from engine, reome cap & rotor, remove drive gear from the bottom of distributor , slide shaft up & out, remove pick up.reverse steps & reset ignition timing. IMPORTANT TO MARK LOCATION OF ROTOR BEFORE REMOVAL
First remove distributor cap. loosen the bolt that holds down distributor and take holding plate of MAKE SURE YOU MARK DISTRIBUTOR POSITION AGAINST BLOCK AND ROTOR AGAINST DISTRIBUTOR HOUSING. pull out distributor from engine. now take out the pin that holds the gear on the distributor rotor shaft take the gear of the shaft, position of gear on shaft is not important. now from the the top of the distriburator pull the rotor shaft out and wow la. camshaft position sensor is ready to be taken out. To install just reverse the steps and when you ready to install the gear on shaft make sure that the gears is against the distributor housing and not on the tip of the shaft (up side down). installing distributor on engine. install the the rotor on shaft and turn it about 20 degrees clock wise so when you push the distributor into the engine is going to turn back to the original position. You are welcome jcdl. 7-10-08
It is the only electrical part that's in the distributor. Remove the cap and rotor and you will see it.
change the rotor. spark shorting to distributor shaft
The distributor shaft wears out the bushings and the shaft begins to wobble. The rotor eventually makes contact with the distributor cap contacts, damaging the cap and rotor and finally the engine quits running. During the last stage you will hear the distributor make a clicking noise.
The rotor only fits one way on to the distributor shaft.
Typical: Remove distributor. Use punch to tap roll pin from gear at base of distributor. Use an arbor press (not a hammer) to press distributor mainshaft out of gear. Shaft will then easily come free of the distributor. If a hammer is used, now replace the complete distributor. Unbolt the pickup and replace. Reinstall shaft and gear being sure that gear hole aligns with shaft hole. Install a new roll pin. Install in vehicle. Set ignition timing.
If the distributor shaft has side to side play it is probably worn out. If the shaft has no play just replace the cap and rotor.
remove dist.cap.unplug wires and hoses mark rotor where it is pointing...remove holddown bolt remove dist.
