There are three main ethnic groupings in Malaysia, the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians. There are also numerous other tribes and clans of the indigenous race in West and East Malaysia.

In terms of verbal communication, the main language spoken by the Malays is Bahasa Malaysia which is also the official language. Bahasa Malaysia is an amalgam of various languages such as Indian dialects, Chinese dialects and the original Malay language.

The languages spoken by the Chinese are Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Cantonese. The official Chinese language is Mandarin.

As for the Indians, common dialects include Tamil, Malayalam, Urdu, Telegu and Hindi.

The other groups such as Kadazan and Iban have their own variation.

English is widely spoken in urban areas and the standard is quite high compared to global standards. In areas of commerce, law, and medicine English is widely used. English is also taught in schools where Maths and Science subjects are in English.

Non verbal communication include hand signs and eye communication, facial expressions, etc.
