It forces other countries to conform to the economics of the countries they have to deal with. They have to find common ground to exist with each other to make it work.
Like what is going on with China and the U.S., one wants the other to clean up it's act or it's processes and not pollute the world. It also tries to change the way their people treat each other. One may not like to deal with a country that uses slave labor and try to get them to stop it.
