Very difficult to find the age on these various models. The Stevens M87J was also built as a store or House Brand. Savage, Stevens, Springfield, Fox, Sears, Cotter & co., C.I.L. & Belknap were just a few of the know ones. The 87J was a Pre-1968 rifle at a minimum. Most I've seen do not have the S/N as required by the GCA 1968. They are somewhat rare, but not very valuable. This rifle is often referred to as a "Springfield 87J" or a Savage/Stevens 87J or simply the Stevens 87J. They didn't last very long because they had a very frustrating way of jamming, no matter how clean the rifle. A dry film lube was recommended for the magazine guide and lifter. The spring & bumper were also suspect on some models. The original firing pin was weak and would often break. A conversion kit was designed with a "T" style firing pin and sold as an upgrade in the 1970's. These are still available from Numrich or e-gunparts.com Unfortunately, these languish in closets all over the country and sell for $100-$150 in mint condition.
