As heroes
Birth of a Nation portrayed the Ku Klux Klan as a civic organization.

They were seen as the "good guys" defending the civilian populace from rampaging blacks. Criticism of this portrayal of the KKK led to Griffith making "Intolerance" as a form of apology.
Griffith used source material that was biased toward the Ku Klux Klan, casting them as heroes instead of villains. The film portrayed African Americans in a racist light, as well as reinterpreting the historical events in favor of southern sympathies. That said, content aside, the film is an example of the techniques of silent film at its finest. Unfortunately, it was at the service of bigoted themes.
