The surrender of Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 9th 1865.

This was the biggest of the Confederate armies in the field, and its surrender is taken as the notional end of the war, although some smaller units were still in action for a few more weeks.

There was never a peace treaty, because there had never been a declaration of war in the first place - Lincoln refused to recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation.
