As the premier band of the Marine Corps, it was naturally referred to as the Marine Band when founded by an act of Congress in 1798. It was given the nickname "The President's Own" by Thomas Jefferson.
"The President's Own" is their nickname.
The US Army Band "Pershing's Own" maintains a current roster on its website.
It may have been temporary. It is available now.
The United States Marine Band is a long time tradition going back on Jully 11th, 1798. In 1801 the U.S. Marine Band played for President Adams. Since then the band has played for more presidents and other places such as funerals, ceremonies and state dinners. The purpose of the band is to continue a strong American tradition.
From the historian of the US Marine Band:"The Marine Band has never featured a harmonica player....Many years ago the Hohner Company had been naming their various different harmonica models after famous personalities. In 1896 they created a new harmonica and named it the Marine Band. They were apparently hoping to cash in on the fame and name recognition of the Marine Band to boost interest in their new instrument. It has been their most popular model since their founding in 1857."
