Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) was established on May 1, 1969 by the promulgation of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand Act B.E. 2511 which merged assets and operations of the three previous state enterprises, namely Yanhee Electricity Authority, Lignite Authority and the Northeast Electricity Authority. It presently is the state enterprise under the Ministry of Energy. EGAT presently builds, owns and operates several types and sizes of power plants across the country with a combined installed capacity of 15,035.80 MW, accounting for about 59 percent of the country's 25,646.99 MW generating capacity. EGAT also purchases electric power from private power companies and neighboring countries. Thailand currently relies on natural gas for about two-thirds of its electricity production, with the remainder coming from coal and hydropower. Electricity demand currently exceeds generating capacity, forcing Thailand to import electricity from neighbouring Laos and Malaysia. Plans have recently been announced for nuclear build, but this is at a very early stage, start of build scheduled 2015.
The King is a smart man. He has worked to improve the lives of all Thais. Electricity, health, education, food; in general every aspect of Thailand is better because of this Great King!
