Norwegian inventors have brought progess and new ideas to their own country and the world. Some better known examples of Norwegian inventions include:

  • Aersol Spray Cans - patented November 23, 1927 by Norwegian engineer Erik Rotheim
  • The Cheese Slicer - invented by Thor Bjørklund in 1925
  • Modern Gas Turbines - Ægidius Elling is credited as the "father of the gas turbine," having invented the first practical or "modern" version in the early 1900s. One of the earliest known predecessors to Elling's creation was invented in England in 1791.
  • Postage Meter - One of the earliest examples of such a device was patented by Norwegian inventor Engle Frankmussler (Edward Franks) in the UK in 1884.
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) - used in all modern web development to format & add style to web pages, CSS was first proposed by HÃ¥kon Wium Lie in 1994. Lie and Dutch computer scientist Bert Bos then developed the initial CSS standard.
  • Trampe Bicycle Lift - a lesser-known creation of Nowegian origin, was designed specifically to carry cycle & rider up a steep hill. The original (and only) Sykkelheisen Trampe located Trondheim, Norway was replaced with more modern technology in 2012.
