The band Hello wrote the song in 1975, it was a top 40 hit in the UK. However, the version you are hearing in the commercials was recorded be Ace Frehely in his 1978 solo project as the Band Kiss was beginning its eventual breakup. It reached number 13 on American billboards top 100 that same year. This was by far the most played version of the song that was on American radio from 1978 - 1985. thus making it one of the highest charting and longest lasting songs from any siglne member of the Kiss solo projects.

"New York Groove" was also performed on Kiss's tours of 1979 and 1980, and became a staple of Frehley's shows during his solo tours in the 1980s and 90s, and again during the Reunion Tour when he rejoined Kiss in 1996; again before his sudden and abrupt departure from the band while in tour that same year.

More recently, you can here the originaly version from the Band hello on the GTA Sound track or a new remade version with a female singer (sounds quite like Joan Jett from the 1980's) as the Title track to a New CBS drama NYC 22.
