Mexico does not have an official language. It has a de facto language (Spanish) spoken by the majority of the population. Also, there are 62 Amerindian languages recognized as national languages, which can be used for official documents.

Nowadays, Spanish is the dominant language. Foreign languages such as English, French and German are spoken for business and tourism purposes.

During ancient times, the main language was Nahuatl, native tongue of the Aztec people who founded Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City) on April 13, 1325.

Spanish is the most spoken language in Mexico City, with almost 100% of capitalinos (21.16 million people) speaking it.

The second and third languages would include both Nahuatl (the ancient Aztec language) and English:

  • Nahuatl, spoken by 30,000 to 100,000 people who would be considered bilingual.
  • English, spoken between 100,000 and 1 million people. However, proficiency would vary greatly, and only 50,000 to 100,000 would be considered bilingual.
