To Understand this one would have to look at different aspects like the development theory and also the History of Nigeria ( Colonization). First on the issue of development theory, the third world entirely is characterised as poor, underdevelpoed/develpoing Countries that are dependent on the Rich North, so in Nigeria's case after decolonization as a state it began to fail because of the instabilty in power, ethnic and religious conflict, sabotaging Public Industries, badleadership/corruption and of course Civil war. Most importantly Nigeria and the periphery(developing) provides primary raw materials and cheap labour and the rich developed produces and exports at a higher cost. Making it dependent on the Rich developed Nations. A good example is Nigeria's crude oil, large reserves of Crue oil are exported or refined by foreign Oil Corporations at the expense of the Nigerian people because Nigeria has no Functioning Refinery. Projects are always sabotaged, foriegn aid always diverted.

Underdevelopment usually results in a small, unstable economy (that might grow tremendously fast, which is too much to handle), a corrupt government, and a low standard of living and average income.
