Some things that make Texas a unique state include:

  • Texas was one of only three states that were once officially recognized independent nations (as Republic of Texas) before joining the Union, the others being Vermont (Vermont Republic) and Hawaii (Kingdom and Republic of Hawaii).
  • Texas is the only state that is legally permitted to secede from the Union. (Near the conclusion of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation that made it illegal for any Confederate-controlled territories to secede from the Union if and when it was ever readmitted into the Union. At this time, Texas was controlled by Union forces and, therefore, was exempted from the proclamation.)
  • Texas is the only state to have had six national flags flown over it; in effect, Texas was ruled by six different nations (Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, Confederate States of America).
  • The Republic of Texas was the first nation in the world to enact a homestead exemption (1839).
  • Texas is the only state to have its own embassies in other countries, apart from United States embassies. The Republic of Texas built two Embassies of the Republic of Texas in the United Kingdom; one in London and another directly opposite of St. James's Palace in the Court of St. James's. These buildings still stand today.
  • The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, situated in Houston, is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) center for human spaceflight training, research, and flight control. This is the root of the infamous phrase "Houston, we've had a problem" from the Apollo 13 launch.
  • The Texas Medical Center, located in Houston, is the largest medical center in the world and is a leading researcher in various subjects of the medical field. More heart surgeries are performed at the medical center than anywhere else in the world.
  • Texas has the longest highway and railroad systems in the nation. It also has the most number of airports of any state in the Union.
  • Texas currently has the most presidential libraries contained within it at three (Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and George W. Bush Presidential Center).
  • Texas is one of the "battleground states" of presidential elections. Because of the size of the population of Texas, under the Electoral College (based on state population), Texas is allocated a larger number of electors than most other states. Other "battleground states" include New York and California. During their presidential campaigns, candidates focus heavily and spend most of their resources on these states so that they can secure the electors' votes. If a candidate is able to secure the votes of all three of these states, he/she is almost guaranteed a victory. Securing two also gives a hefty advantage, in which case the other candidate will have to secure the votes of practically every one of the smaller states.
  • Texas has the largest number of state parks, state recreation areas, and state historic sites of any state.
  • Texas is also the birth-state of many significant people (for a full list, click on the "Related link" below) including:
  • Former-President Dwight Eisenhower
  • former-President Lyndon B. Johnson
  • Demi Lovato
  • Nick Jonas
  • Selena Gomez
  • Lance Armstrong
  • Michael Johnson
  • Michael E. DeBakey
  • Matthew McConaughey

Unfortunately the early days of Texas saw many battles. One of the bloodiest, with loss of life of many well-known men, was the Alamo. This battle was a salient event in the Texas Revolution. President Gen Santa Ana asaulted the Alamo Many Texans and adventurers from the US defeated the Mexican Army, ending the revolution. Reinforcements included James Bowie, inventor of the Bowie knife, and William Travis.

The Alamo was designated as an official Texas State Shrine. It is now "the most popular tourist site in Texas". The Alamo has been the subject of numerous non-fiction works beginning in 1843. Most Americans, however, are more familiar with the mythsspread by many of the movie and television adaptations, including the 1950s Disney miniseries Davy Crockett and John Wayne's 1960 film The Alamo.

Throughout the siege these towns had received multiple couriers, dispatched by Travis to plead for reinforcements and supplies. The most famous of his letters, written February 24, was addressed To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World. According to historians, , the letter is "considered by many as one of the masterpieces of American patriotism". Copies of the letter were distributed across Texas and eventually reprinted throughout the United States and much of Europe.

Legend holds that at some point on March 5, Travis gathered his men and explained that an attack was imminent, and that the Mexican Army would prevail. He supposedly drew a line in the sand and asked those willing to die for the Texian cause to cross and stand alongside him; only one man was reputed to decline. The last Texian verified to have left the Alamo was James Allen, a courier who carried personal messages from Travis and several of the other men.

Travis was the first defender to die, The last Texian group to remain in the open were Crockett and his men, defending the low wall in front of the church. Unable to reload, they used their rifles as clubs and fought with knives. After a volley of fire and a wave of Mexican bayonets the few remaining Texians in this group fell back toward the church.

Too sick to participate in the battle, Bowie likely died in bed. Some witnesses maintained that they saw several Mexican soldiers enter Bowie's room, bayonet him, and carry him alive from the room. Others claimed that Bowie shot himself or was killed by soldiers while too weak to lift his head. According to historians, probably the most accurate"[version is that Bowie died on his cot, "back braced against the wall, and using his pistols and his "Bowie knife."

During the siege, newly elected delegates from across Texas met and on March 2, the delegates declared independence, forming th The Republic of Texas.

The government system of the State of Texas is unitary democratic, with a bicameral legislature similar in function to Congress with a Senate and a House of Representatives, but at a state level. Texas employs the use of Dillon's Rule, which mandates that the State government takes precedence over all local municipal governments.

All Texas laws follow and adhere to the Texas Constitution, a state level constitution that was adopted in 1876. Unlike the federal Constitution of the United States, the Texas Constitution is considerably longer and provides much more detail, at the same time giving less room for flexibility.

In light of the 2013 United States federal government shutdown, it is interesting to note that since 1876, when it comes time to determine the budget for the current fiscal year in Texas, the state constitution explicitly prohibits the Texas Legislature from being dismissed without a budget being passed. In other words, as an incentive to pass a state budget for the fiscal year, state congressman are not allowed to go home until it is completed.
