During 2nd world war, Italy under Mussolini joined hands with Hitler of Germany in the race with the same nationalistic vigor. The other countries who joined the axis did not have the same nationalistic feeling, with the only objective of ousting the German-Italy duo and to make an end of the years long world war and establish world peace.
Axis is the term of Germany, Italy and Japan union in that war. Italy did not last long but the leader Benito named that term.
