During the early middle ages both Deganwy (Carnarvon) and Aberffraw (Anglesey) functioned as Welsh capital. It is near impossible to say which of them has the prior claim. Both cities were abandoned as national capitals (due to English pressure) before 1170, and between then and 1955 Wales had no capital city.
