The Sphinx was built to represent the reigning Pharaoh in the form of a lion and/or god. If you look at pictures of the Sphinx, you can see that it has a human's face (in spite of the fact that the nose is broken).

It was built for the pharaoh Khafra in about 2500 BC. However not everyone agrees that this is the case. Some think that the Sphinx along with the pyramids of Giza and the Nile River are a monument to the stars in Orion's belt.
