If the brand names are Muntz or Dumont or Silvertone it's a good start. ;) Seriously, it really depends on the quality of the picture and if it's operating reliably. Soon (Feb17th. 2009) you'll have to have a digital converter to be able to use the older sets, or a cable box or satellite receiver. That's another indication that your set is getting to be on the old side. If it's working OK and you're not ready to purchase a new set, then don't. If you're looking for an excuse to get a new one, then just make the statement that your TV's getting too old and it's time to replace it.

is it hard to fix is it breaking down alot is it not digital what type of make and when was that make published thats how you tell
A sign that your television is old is if it becomes pixelated (little squares on the television) or changes colour frequently. If these things are only happening during storms and heavy rain that is perfectly normal because the satellite cannot connect properly through the storm or heavy rain. If these things are happening when it is not heavy rain or storming I would advise you, first to unplug the television and reboot the whole system and if that doesn't work you should call the company from which the television came from (Sony, Panasonic) and if all else fails by a new television, taking the salespersons opinion into account.
Maybe the sound will go all muzzy
The screen will flicker
It will turn off/on when not made to.
Stuff like that.
To tell if your TV is going bad, check to see if you noticed any of these problems while watching your TV.
If you notice any of those problems, you are probably ready for a new TV.
You notice your TV when it gets rusty, it starts to malfunction, the colour changes from coloured to black and white and you also noticing that the sounds on TV, your're not hearing them again
When it doesn't work, is black and white, or there's a huge box sticking out of the back of it
