The 1950s saw huge growth in the television market and hundred of new models were released over the decade. Screen sizes were increasing during that time. At the start of the period, a typical television screen was in the region of 12 inches or so but the cabinets tended to be much larger. At the close of the decade, sizes had reached 21 inches although the increase in cabinet size meant that larger televisions were often free standing and were pieces of furniture in their own right.
